NORTHPORT (Malaysia) Bhd at Port Klang has deferred the move to reduce the free storage period for containers, which was to take effect from the beginning of next month.
This followed requests from shipping lines and port users, Northport said in a statement yesterday.
The reduction in the free storage period, which is aimed mainly at achieving greater efficiency in the delivery system following progress in the documentation and cargo process flows at Port Klang, will now come into effect from June 1 2008, it said.
According to Northport, the lead time of seven months is expected to assuage the fears and concerns of the port users who must take necessary measures to ensure that their containers do not idle or dwell beyond the free storage period.
"The extent of container dwelling time at a port is often a measure of the efficiency in the delivery system involving the port as well as the landside systems that include the Customs, haulage and related documentary processes," it said.
Containers dwelling beyond the free storage period will attract charges on a graduated scale based on the number of days under Port Klang Authority (PKA) tariff, Northport said.
The changes in the free storage period from five to three days for inbound containers and from seven to three days for outbound containers, and from 28 days to 14 days for trans-shipment containers, were made by PKA, with the Transport Ministry approval. - Bernama |
