| China boxes piling up in US June 02, 2006
China boxes piling up in US
CHINA is shipping so many goods to the US that the Chinese often find it cheaper to build new containers with low-cost labour and leave their original boxes in the US than to send them home empty, the Reuters news agency reports from Virginia.
Hundreds of empty containers are stacked beside the track near the Norfolk Southern Corporation Portlock rail yard in Chesapeake, Virginia, it says. They "look ready to board ship on the US East Coast and head back to China, but they are going nowhere".
"These containers are here to stay," the news agency quotes Portlock trainmaster, Brian Stanley, as saying, while pointing at the piles.
The empty containers reflect the changing shape of the US economy as manufacturing goes overseas, the Reuters report comments.
Shipping companies, railways and real estate firms are all scrambling to deal with the fundamental question of how to cope with the ever-increasing US-bound flow of shipping containers.
